Male infertility

In addition to genes and chromosomes that cause male infertility (see genes and infertility - link below), male infertility can be caused by developmental and external factors. Two developmental problems, failure of the testes to descend and absence of the vas deferens, cause infertility. Infection that involve the testes, can cause total infertility. These include many different sexually transmitted infections as well as the common childhood infection of mumps. Anything that causes serious physical injury to the testis or causes it to become overheated, can cause temporary or permanent infertility.

Is there a lifestyle cause?

Yes. There are many lifestyle causes of male infertility including exposures to chemicals, radiation and heat. Injury to the testis can generate sperm antibodies which then cause infertility. Another avoidable cause of male infertility is anabolic steroids.
