Recurrent miscarriage

Recurrent miscarriage is the condition where a woman experiences three or more miscarriages, usually consecutively. The miscarriages in this condition are slightly ore likely to be normal than they are in sporadic miscarriages. There is also more likelihood (approximately 5% risk) of either the man or the woman carrying a balanced chromosomal rearrangement.

A small proportion of couples who experience recurrent miscarriage have genes that are too similar - some studies support this finding and other do not. It is not generally the cause of the problem. Some women with this problem have some type of structural abnormality of the uterus that leads to the problem. Our own research has shown that many cases of this type are caused by the woman being in an ongoing stressful situation. Another cause is getting pregnant too quickly after a previous miscarriage and occasionally a miscarriage can be brought on by sexual intercourse.

Is there a lifestyle cause?

Yes. This can result from the same causes as all miscarriages i.e. ageing and/or a serious biological and/or hormonal imbalance, resulting from poor or unbalanced nutrition or other aspects of lifestyle. Most can be overcome by correcting diet and other negative lifestyle habits. Stress is another major factor here as is getting pregnant too quickly after a previous loss. There are other more unusual causes, such as chromosomal imbalances, which should be checked out.
