Women aged 35 and older
In reproductive terms, 35 is getting old. Sadly, those who leave reproducing until after about age 35 will experience much increased rates of miscarriage and decreased fertility. There is also an increased risk of giving birth to a child with a problem such as trisomy 21.
The reason this occurs is that like all cells, the support cells in the ovary only have a limited number of times that they can divide. Like all cells, once they reach their limit of division, they undergo senescent changes. These changes particularly affect the mitochondria - the energy powerhouses of the cell. With decreased oxygen available to them, the eggs themselves are much more prone to error.
Is there a lifestyle cause?
The cause is age itself but any other bad habit will enhance the effect. Women over 35 must optimise their diet and lifestyle. We will soon trial other possible fertility enhancers for older women. if you are interested, please contact Dr Judy.
